This new building construction design project features a Place of Worship, one storey structure that aims to provide a community oriented program. The floor area is 2040 square metres and includes; an auditorium/gymnasium, kitchen/cafe, administration area, classrooms/childrens’ spaces, a lounge, youth area, storage, supporting spaces and utilities.
The building takes advantage of the site in several respects. It addresses Leslie Street with a strong presence. It is proposed that a path will connect the site to the nearby recreation centre to the west. And it is also intended that the site be emphasized by taking into consideration the natural features. For example, the building overlooks a pond, preserves trees, utilizes permeable surfaces in the parking area, provides walking paths and works with the natural grades.
Working through a collaborative methodology has enabled the design to reflect the ideas of staff and congregation members, making the experience exciting and giving members an appropriate sense of ownership in this undertaking.
