Ted Handy & Associates is honoured to be the recipient of a 2014 OAA Design Excellence Award for the County of Simcoe Administration Centre expansion. The award recognizes the best in architectural design and innovation among Ontario Architecture firms based on the criteria of creativity, context, sustainability, good design/good business and the legacy of the project.
Designed in partnership with Teeple Architects of Toronto, the County of Simcoe Administration Centre expansion was intended to resolve the complex access to the existing building and to take advantage of a natural site. Public access to 22 different departments was improved though the design of an external ring which connects existing spaces and new areas of the building. Along with much needed public space, the design also includes a new cafeteria and lounge area for staff. The expansion was carefully sited to minimize the impact to the site. The new work to the building is LEED Gold certified.
The OAA Awards have recognized design excellence in Ontario since 1985. The 2014 awards will be presented that the OAA’s annual conference in Montreal on May 9, 2014. The County of Simcoe Administration Centre expansion was one of 15 projects selected for an award out of more than 170 submissions.
